SPOTLIGHT SHORTS JA 2023

The Spotlight Initiative is a global multi-year initiative of the European Union and the United Nations, focused on eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls and to move this issue into the spotlight and centre of efforts to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment.

To create awareness, encourage prevention and shine a creative lens on this issue in Jamaica, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will fund and collaborate with the Jamaica Film and Television Association (JAFTA), via the Spotlight Initiative, on the Spotlight Shorts Ja developmental initiative.

Two 5-10 minute short film projects will be developed through the initiative and with a grant of up to JMD$1,500,000.00 per project.

Jamaican filmmakers were asked to submit treatments and other items (See Eligibility and Guidelines below) for short film projects that focus on themes of gender-based family violence, such as child sexual abuse or intimate partner violence.

This initiative encourages the inclusion of concepts that focus on either the female survivor experience or the male perspective on the issue of violence against women and girls (either as perpetrator or supporter of female survivor).

All projects should be produced in documentary or docu-drama style, with compelling human interest content featuring first person experiences, balanced with creative license for filmmakers.

All interested project team applicants must attend the mandatory sensitization session on gender-based family violence.
